Roberto Di Matteo’s Chelsea begin their defence of their Champions League title tomorrow night at Stamford Bridge in Group E.

Team news: John Terry should be available for selection after shaking off a knee injury that he picked up against QPR at the weekend after coming through a full training session today.

John Obi Mikel should also be fit to start despite a slight back injury whilst Juan Mata is expected to play after being rested at the weekend.

The team I’d choose:

P. Cech

B. Ivanovic – D. Luiz – J. Terry – A. Cole

J. Mikel – Ramires

V. Moses – E. Hazard – J. Mata

F. Torres

We ought to start using Cesar Azpilicueta more as he’s a more natural right-back than Branislav Ivanovic but I doubt Di Matteo will try it out in a big Champions League game, but I want to see him in their against Stoke at the weekend.

In midfield, Frank Lampard isn’t playing well enough in his position and constantly breaks forwards and leaves Mikel exposed, so we should try something new and rest him. We need someone that’s going to pass forwards or drive the ball on, not someone that passes sideways and makes a dash for the penalty area.

Fernando Torres upset a few fans by storming down the tunnel without shaking Di Matteo’s hand and staying to support his team-mates after he was substituted late against Wigan. I think he’s going to have to accept that he cannot simply have a monopoly on the centre forward position unless he puts in consistent performances. Daniel Sturridge is there and has made an impact from the bench in the games he’s come on in this season.

Most of all, I hope Robbie plays players in their natural positions.

Who’d be in your Chelsea XI for our Champions League opener v Juventus? – Have you say in the comments section below

Well! Well!! Well!!! People thats a perfect selection from the analyst. The question is-will rdm effect this changes? Lampard is ruining the whole squad for now. Mikel+ramires will be more effective. Moses will offer strength and pace. Anywhere,if the coach fails to act now, then a sense a disaster looming in the horizon.

  2. Peter says:

I think torres should play up front with moses & mata at d wings. Lamp, mikel & remires should b at the midfield. Ivanovic, cahil, luis, cole & cech. Juv are nt so dumb they know our game is built around hazard so lets give them somtin else in the 1st half then a full attack wit hazard, replacing lamp, sturridge for torres & azpiliqeata 4 ivanovic. Its right time we change 4rm dis harzard dependance to team work. I ll also like to see oscar but depending on moses performance. Thamks.

no need of suggestion, cuz d coach personaly love betrand,i prefer sturidge outside right,n lampard is ok,just stop using betrand as a winger n tins ll be 5n

RDM, pls utilise our new signings this time around. Juve must have watched our video clips many times, & by now can correctly predict the starting line- up in forming their tactics. My starting XI should be: Cech Ivanovic Cahill Terry Cole Mikel Romeo Moses/Oscar Mata Hazard Torres. Then bring in Sturridge at 60mins of play.

  6. Harry says:

just a thought, could we not play 3-5-2? we could play with Mikel and Luiz as versatile defensive midfield pair and the play Lamps in more of attacking role as he likes? and it still frees up Mata, Moses and Hazard to terrorise defences and get Torres in the game more!! It also will give us more width, and this is what we are lacking at the moment….
    Cech

    Ivanovic Terry Cole

    Mikel Luiz

    Lampard
    Moses Mata
    Hazard

    Torres

And we still have masses of talent on the bench!!!!
Subs: Cahill, Cesar, Bertrand, Oscar, Ramires, Marin, Sturridge

ALL YOUR COMMENTS ARE GOOD. WE NEED A CHELSEA WITHOUT LAMPARD. WE ARE KILING A LOT OF TALENT BECOUSE OF HIM. FINALY, CHELSEA CAN DEFEND THE CL WITH THE LINE UP BELOW
    . . . . . . . cech. . . . . . . . .

    Iv.. . .teri. . Luiz. . .cole

    . . . . .mikel . . . remz. . .

    Moses. .hazard. .mata.

    . . . . . Sturridge. . . . . . .

tores, marin, oscar, cahil, betrand, lampard tumbul and remue shld b on d bench . Oscar cn replace mata or remeres, marin can com for moses, torres for sturride and lampard can replace remires if we ar winning with 2 or more goals. Betrand cn also provide quintesential rep for cole so wil cahil sub injury laible terry as the case may be with tha above it will be chel 3 : 1 juv

Agree with your formation except for Luiz, will rather have Cahill in there beside Terry, for me he is a calmer option. On the side though, was watching Yaya Toure against Real Madrid yesterday and it occurred to me that we actually have a player with the potential to play like him if properly developed, that player is David Luiz. He has defensive ability, likes to go forward and has the stature so he will not be easily pushed off the ball and his control of ball in opponents’ box actually show something is lying there waiting to be tapped if well guided. What do you guys think?
