Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says that even £35m would not be enough to tempt him to part with Luka Modric, which funnily enough is about the amount Chelsea are reportedly set to offer as a final bid for the Croatian.

The Blues have had bids of £22m and £27m knocked back so far, but Spurs are standing firm over the player despite the fact he has publicly said he wants to join Chelsea and has allegedly handed in a transfer request in an attempt to leave White Hart Lane.

Chelsea may come back with an improved bid for the player, with £35m mooted as a potential offer, but that’s not enough for ‘Arry, who appears eager to hold out for more.

When asked if £35m would be a suitable offer for Modric, Redknapp said:

“If we were looking to sell him it wouldn’t meet my valuation. I think he is worth an awful lot more money than that.

“Really, we’re not looking to sell Luka. We need to keep our best players so he is a player that we want to keep if possible. It is in the hands of the chairman of the football club [Daniel Levy]. It’s not my decision at the end of the day.

“I obviously want to keep him as the coach but the chairman says he is not for sale so we’ll have to wait and see. We’re quite determined, if we can, to hang on to him but it is a difficult situation. It’s a difficult one for Luka and it’s a difficult one for Tottenham.”

I’m not entirely sure what sort of world Redknapp is living in, but it would be good money for a player that doesn’t want to be there and I don’t think he’s worth more than the aforementioned amount. And I don’t think Chelsea will go higher than that, so Spurs are just pricing the midfielder out of the market and the move that he wants, which angers many of our fans but I think Modric was stupid to sign the long-term contract he’s tied to in the first place.

The Tottenham manager also recently claimed that everyone wants Modric:

“Everyone wants Luka. Just ask Alex Ferguson what he thinks of him, ask Roberto Mancini at Manchester City – they all want him. He could play for Barcelona.”

Do they? United may have an interest in him, but I couldn’t see him usurping Xavi or Iniesta at Barcelona and I haven’t noticed a bidding war erupt since we made an offer for the player. As it stands, we appear to be the only club in for him at the moment and represent the best opportunity for Spurs to cash in for the player.

As a Chelsea fan I’d happily leave them with a player that doesn’t want to be there and I think he’ll leave there in January or next summer if he doesn’t leave now, and I think it’s doubtful they’d get more than £35m for him then either. The sort of money we’re talking about here is Wesley Sneijder money, is Modric worth more than him? Nope.

Assuming we do make an improved offer and it is rejected, is it time to give up on Luka Modric and turn our attentions elsewhere?

Anyone who looks at modric and thinks he ain’t no good, he don’t score goals, he don’t create much shoud not be watching football. He makes us tick, play. The whole flow of our game is so much better when he’s in. Agreed the very special players get goals as well but they are few and far between. Just ask Liverpool how much they miss alonso… He never got goals or many assists, and just how many goals does xavi get in the best team in the world, not many. Only an idiot looks at stats to judge a player.

  2. Levy says:

Chelsea paid £50m for Torres so on the basis of his performances Modric must be worth £75m at least.

He didn’t have a good season, but he has high market and commercial value, which was a factor in his price. Modric has no global appeal whatsoever.

chelsea shuld look elsewhere if tot’ham is nt ready 2 do business,i think 35m is a fair price anything more than dt is nt a gud business.

From my observation i can definitely say Luka Modric for £35m is a fair price, but anything over is a definite no no. I know that Luka Modric doesn’t compare nowhere near Barcelona midfield, but its the variables that he brings to the table that really matters at the end of the day. He’s a good passer, quick, good feet and controls the tempo of the game. But in regards to what Gianluca Vialli said, “Chelsea can do much better than Modric” and i agree with him 100%.
The person of a creative midfield maestro and calibre that Chelsea needs at the moment is someone of Sneijder quality without a doubt. He is everything you need in a playmaker and more. Long range shots, long thru passes, great contol, can create for himself and others and have a good eye for scoring goals and being at the right place at the right time. Sneijder in Chelsea’s midfield on the left along with Ramires the workhouse in the middle and Benayoun the unstoppable force on the right in a 4-3-3 formation would be a force to be reckon with.

If all you spurs sh**t fan are angry about chelsea being a big club why dosent your owner borrowed some money (i will called it little change from Abramovich) so maybe you can compete for major honours..the poor boy is crying knowing it will take a thousand yrs for THFC to win a trophy and challenge at the highest..mind you, you will all have shit faces when he comes to chelsea,no one is aiming 4 ur club knowing you have noting to offer except to train and sell, why hasn’t your stupid Levy reports chelsea to the F.A if he thinks it’s wrong, all he’s trying to do was hoping that we will up the bid (to lets say £40-45) which will never happen..kip on hoping Levy, kip on hoping shiit THFC fans as you will see Luka Modric in Chelsea flying colours…Pissss off.

I have followed football for 60 yrs and just because a rich Russian mafia boss buys Chelsea some titles over the last decade does this not make you a club worth envying.

Abramovitch’s mistake(like that of MC’s owners) is that he wants success quickly and makes no bones about the hows of it. Now MC are the biggest spenders by far and Chelsea are in danger of being left behind so anything which gives them leverage is ok.

What I think is so funny is that most of you Chelsea supporters hadn’t even heard of the club before Hoddle came and then the “fat one” sold out to Roman. You cannot buy class and you lot are proof of it, I have more respect for Arsenal and the way their club operates than I ever will for Chelsea.

I remember Chelsea frequently qualifying for the champions league competition few years before Abramovich came on board……Sorry, please remind me what position was tot?

It’s true football is quite broken beyond repair and it’s rubbish watching a club do well just because of money, but Spurs do the same as them with tapping up and disrupting players it’s just from clubs with less money than them (lazy eyed slap face disrupted adeb and Parker, but it’s ok when he does it).

Modric is just one player and can be replaced with the money easily. People need to calm down and take a step back, he’s just not that good (no one else is trying to buy him!). Man utd sold Ron and look at them!

Take the overinflated price and run you’ll be better for it and not a laughing stock for forcing someone to play for you.

I don’t understand what all the threats of reserves or bench do to a player, except of course since WHL has the guy on slavery salary. Otherwise, sitting on the bench for 40k per week, guess who’s losing. On the other hand, Luca needs to sack his agent pronto. How can you get your principal tied to 40k per month on a six year contract with some gentleman agreement with a wheeler dealer like Levy? What were you guys thinking? Who are Luca’s representatives? This is kindagarteen stuff for crying out loud. Except if he got settled behind Luca.

  10. TIMLOS says:

Instead of beople crying about clubs being bought, I think they should be grateful that they now have a league worthy of some interest. Gone are the days of 2 horse race as I can say that there will be at least a 5 horse race in the coming season. Isn’t that better?
