Chelsea are set to use out-of-favour defender Filipe Luis as a makeweight in a deal to sign Atletico Madrid star Koke, according to reports.

Speculation is rife that Luis, who joined the Blues from Atletico for £16m last summer, is keen on a return after playing second fiddle to left-back Cesar Azpilicueta for much of the season.

Jose Mourinho is said to be a fan of the 23-year-old midfielder, and tried to sign him before the Spaniard penned a contract extension last year in a deal that saw Atletico include a £48 million release clause.

The West Londoners are unperturbed by the figures, however, and will use Luis’s disenchantment to their advantage as they renew an interest in Koke, according to the Evening Standard.

The report goes on to claim that cash-strapped Atletico are experiencing financial difficulties and would not be adverse to the prospective player-plus-cash deal.

What say you? Should Chelsea offload Luis in a deal that will see Koke move the other way? Let us know below.

Koke will stay in Madrid for another 5 years. He turned down Barcelona and he will turn down Chelsea. Filipe Luis burned too many bridges when he left Atletico and he turns 30 next year. This is a total speculation piece of journalism. Filipe Luis will leave, but no one will buy him at top price. Chelsea didn’t play him and wasted their money.
