It is of no surprise that Jose Mourinho will be bringing Rui Faria with him to Chelsea but will effectively be his No 2 rather than just being a fitness coach, according to reports.
The 37-year-old was spotted alongside Mourinho at Wembley Stadium on Monday afternoon as the pair were in attendance to watch the Championship play-off final won by Crystal Palace against Watford, a game in which Chelsea’s Nathaniel Chalobah played in.
There has been a lot of speculation over the reasons for their visit but I’m not certain they travelled nearly 800 miles just to watch one of our young talents.
Anyway, Faria has worked with Mourinho since 2001 at U.D. Leiria and has followed the Special One to Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and will return with him at Stamford Bridge as Mourinho’s most trusted lieutenant after six years away from West London as reported in The Sun.
Faria has been ever-present for most of Mourinho’s managerial career and one of the more memorable/amusing Chelsea moments was when UEFA forced him to remove his hat to prove he wasn’t communicating with the manager for a Champions League tie between the Blues and Bayern Munich, a tie which Jose was serving a ban.
Mourinho could be suspended for his first two games as Chelsea manager if the Spanish Football Federation manage to get the ban he picked up when he was sent off against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey final to carry over. Suspensions are competition specific in Spain which is why he hasn’t sat out Real Madrid’s final La Liga matches but no such rule exists in England so the FA will have to implement the usual domestic ban…I wonder if Faria will be wearing his infamous woolly hat.
