De RossiReports in from Italy claim that Jose Mourinho’s first signing as Chelsea manager is to be Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi.

Gazzetta dello Sport is the media outlet that the reported the rumour and believe the Italian could be making his way to Stamford Bridge for around £12 million.

Roma have been able to keep hold of their most prized asset up to now despite interest from Manchester City last summer but may now be willing to cash in on the 29-year-old after a disappointing season in which they finished sixth in Serie A.

He’s been a magnificent servant to the Rome club, where he has been for 13 years, and it would be hard to imagine him going anywhere else as I was always sure he’d stick around like Frencesco Totti. But we have missed a dominant force in midfield since Michael Ballack left the club and injuries took their toll on Michael Essien.

De Rossi will turn 30 over the summer and is approaching the latter years of his career but he is still a top player and I certainly wouldn’t mind having him at the club as I’ve long been a fan of his. Whether or not it is a good deal would depend on the price, wage and the player’s ability to adapt to a new environment after being in Italy his entire career. His age will put most people off but Ballack was 29-year-old when he signed for Chelsea back in 2006 and turned out to be a great addition, he was a free transfer though.

He’s always been the complete midfielder with his strength, defensive and passing abilities but I doubt we’ll see him in Chelsea blue by September 1st, even if he’s keen for a new challenge and Roma are willing to sell one of their star names.
