Neither Frank Lampard nor Ashley Cole will be offered long-term deals to stay at Chelsea, according to The Sun.

The England internationals are in the final year of their respective contracts at Stamford Bridge and the tabloid believes that they won’t be offered any more than a year extension due to a new club policy of only offering a one-year deal to thirty-somethings in the squad.

This means that they could leave on a free transfer in the summer and are free to negotiate a deal from January onwards, with the likes of Shanghai Shenhua and LA Galaxy interested in Lamps, whilst Carlo Ancelotti may want to sign Cole for Paris Saint-Germain.

Does this policy make sense?

Yes and no. In terms of Lampard, he’s 34 and is on astronomical wages with no reason to take any less when clubs abroad are willing to pay crazy money for him. It wouldn’t make any sense for Chelsea to offer more than a one-year extension, especially when he’s no longer a guaranteed starter. I reckon he’ll see out his contract in a similar way to Didier Drogba last season and is fully entitled to do so.

Roman Abramovich is also hoping to overhaul the squad by replacing the old with the new and we’re already seeing the benefits of this with exciting signings such as Juan Mata, Marko Marin, Eden Hazard and Oscar. Also, players like David Luiz, Ramires and John Obi Mikel are already permanent fixtures in the squad and have plenty of years left in them.

However, it doesn’t make sense when it comes to Cole and this is why each case should be viewed on its own merits. Cole is 31, still on top of his game and starts regularly for club and country. He’s surely got more than a year at the top level and should probably be offered a three-year deal. He’s already rejected a one-year extension as he seeks more security.

What is your opinion on the Lampard and Cole contract situations?

Is it wrong to actually let a few players in d likes of lampard, Cole and Terry retire in d club? My guess no.
They’ve been outstanding and devoted for Chelsea over the years. So I think they deserve a future at chelsea and they are english players. Trust me this would do a lot in projecting a good image of us. Chelsea for life

To me cole should be given 3 years contract extention, while frank should be allow to go elsewhere.. I think he can pave way for fellani and for some more young midfielders from Italian league.

I agree Lamps, great servant that he’s been, is nearing the end of his days; & like Drogba deserves a huge payday in his twilight years. Cole however certainly should get a 3yr deal he has at least 2 years at the very top & then could go for a nominal transfer fee & big wages after 2yrs

Am not happy reading this article.I hope the duo retire as a Chelsea legend. There is not wrong breaking the rules & offer them 2-3 years contract extension.

Missing the point. Can’t pay a 34+ year old crazy wages because you’re too sentimental to let him go and because he’s too proud to accept less.

If a country can amend her conxtitution, tell me the reason on earth Abromovich cannot have aresay atlist Ashley in particular.let him forget about what the world may say and do the right at the right time.Lampard and Ashley have been the engine room to the team and the club as a whole.think twice Ibram

Because he doesn’t think it’d be worthwhile for the club?

It’ll be wrong to let Cole walk out of the door at only 31, especially as he still has a resale value (not that we’d sell him).

As for Lampard. You can’t pay him £140k+-a-week at his age. If he doesn’t accept a year extension then he doesn’t want to stay and that’s up to him, where’s the problem?
