It was only 18 months ago when Chelsea youngster Sam Hutchinson was forced to retire from football because of a degenerative condition in his right knee, but the defender has made a remarkable comeback and will become part of the first team squad in the New Year.

The 22-year-old will wear the No 27 shirt as Andre Villas-Boas is set to name him as part of Chelsea’s 25-man Premier League squad and could play in the game against Wolverhampton on January 2nd.

His return could prove timely as AVB is short of defensive options with Branislav Ivanovic and Jose Bosingwa suffering injuries, whilst Alex has been out of the manager’s plans since he handed in a transfer request.

Hutchinson has been highly rated as a prospect by Villas-Boas’ predecessors, but his injury problems had always hampered his progress. He has however made a few appearances in which he has impressed in the Chelsea first team, his last being the 7-0 mauling of Stoke where he set Frank Lampard up for his second goal of the match during the double winning campaign.

He can play at right-back as well as playing centre half, which could prove useful as the right fullback position is something of a problem position for Chelsea and Hutchinson may help to resolve that particular issue. However, he still has someway to go in his recovery and there’ll always be a question over his availability (like Ledley King’s situation at Tottenham perhaps), but it’s great to have this promising youngster back in the squad and wish him the best of luck.

I reckon he could be better than Bosingwa and Ivanovic at right-back…when fit.

“My word” bringing Wilkins back sounds like the worst idea ever.

Lovely fella, but completely clueless. We don’t need him, he’s far too friendly with the players we’re trying to get rid of and AVB doesn’t need a translator.

With our history of right backs, Sam Hutchinson can easily be a starter every week – as long as he’s fit.
He’s very similar to Kyle Walker at Sp*
