Chelsea are eyeing a January move for Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, according to The Sun. Chelsea reportedly put in an offer for the defender last year under Carlo Ancelotti, but Atletico were reluctant to sell him, which forced Chelsea to sign David Luiz from Benfica instead.

But it seems Chelsea are willing to return with another offer for the Uruguayan defender, but only if they manage to make space for him by offloading Alex. The Brazilian centre-back has fallen out of favour with boss Andre Vilas-Boas with a number of poor performances early in the season.

Alex didn’t even make the 20-man Champions League squad which travelled to Valencia a few weeks ago. His availability could alert teams such as Arsenal and Juventus, who were both interested in the defender during the summer.

Vilas-Boas wants to create competition for places in every position at Chelsea this season and he has identified the centre half position as one which could be strengthened further.

Godin, who made a name for himself at the World Cup in 2010 for Uruguay, has struggled to replicate that form for Atletico Madrid in La Liga since moving from Villareal just over a a year ago.

A fresh start in the Premier League could be an interesting option for Godin, especially since two of his compatriots have made the move to England over the last year, in the shape of Liverpool pair Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates.

But Chelsea will have to negotiate a move with Atletico Madrid, who may be unwilling to sell one of their best defenders as they aim to return to the Champions League this season.
