Chelsea signing Romelu Lukaku, who cost a reported £18-20 million, has been omitted from Andre Villas-Boas’ 22-man Champions League squad.

Only 17 non-homegrown players are allowed into the squad by UEFA, unlike in the Premier League where Lukaku does not count towards the squad quota because he is under 21.

I think it’s a real shame that Lukaku will miss out on valuable Champions League experience, especially in the early stages when the pressure isn’t quite as high as it is during the knockout stages. I also think he’s good enough to compete in the competition and would have liked to see him named in the squad, perhaps ahead of Salomon Kalou or one of the ageing forwards.

Promising young left-back Ryan Bertrand also misses out on making the 22-man squad, as he is ‘association trained’ rather than ‘club trained’ and clubs are only allowed to name four association trained players as part of  their homegrown quota.

On a brighter note, Josh McEachran makes it in on Chelsea’s ‘B’ list, whilst summer signings Oriol Romeu, Juan Mata and Raul Meireles make the squad.

I think this is terrible. I am sorry to say but I bet he would do a better Job than Torres. Having said that, and it sounds totally mad, but at some point i would love to see Torres, Lukaku, Sturridge, the Drog, Anelka and Mata all playing if only that could happen.

I believe boaz is not serious intead of tired leg kalon why not dis ambitous lukaku

  4. Henry says:

This is insane… Kalou is needed, yes because we have a lack of wingers, but he should be picked over Anelka

Firstly, neither Kalou or Anelka are wingers.

Secondly, Anelka > Kalou. No question.

  6. chelseaclem says:

yes – i totally agree – Lukaku should be selected instead of Kalou – at least.

I think AVB has made some mistakes in selecting his best 22 man quad for the champions league games, Lukalu is the right man we need to lift the champions league trophy this summer and when you leave him out and pick lalou ahead of him, how do you expect us to lift the trophy? Kalou is good, but I wish he should have been sold this summer to others so that we can fully allow the rest ot make thier ways … in to the game. PLEASE THINK OF THIS VERY WELL

Could have left Kalou out as he’s useless and can no longer get away with being ‘young’ and ‘learning his trade’ as he’s 26.

But also, it’s the first example of Drogba being a hindrance to Lukaku rather than a help. Didier has become nothing more than expensive backup and we ought to have put faith in where we invested in Romelu.

Lukaku needs to forget the Drogba comparisons, Drogba was nowhere near as good at his age and Lukaku can be so much more than the Ivorian.

Is not nice for chelsea coach to do that to lukaku

I agree with all Chelsea fellow Chelsea fans comments on this matter. For me Lukaku is better than Kalou, he is stronger, faster, and he has the Drogba mould about him plus if need be he can play wide right or left. Big mistake AVB why are we buying a player for £18million and not even including him for selection in the Champions League. All i can say to AVB is Lukaku is much better than Kalou and Anelka. I hope this does not backfire but i have a feeling it will.
