Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has said that the arrival of Raul Meireles at Stamford Bridge from Liverpool has ended the west London club’s interest in Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric.

The Modric to Chelsea transfer story became something of a saga over the summer and a tedious one at that, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy never changed his original stance on the matter and kept the Croatian at White Hart Lane.

That hasn’t exactly ended the matter though as fresh reports linking the player with a winter move to either Chelsea or Manchester United have sprung up since the close of the transfer window. Perhaps Villas-Boas’ latest words will finally end any talk of Modric ending up at Stamford Bridge.

When asked if Chelsea would make another approach for Modric in January, AVB said:

“No I don’t think so. The market is closed and I don’t think we’ll be back in January. We are pretty happy with what we have.

“We spoke about the need to fill in the space in midfield. Yossi Benayoun could play in the middle or behind the striker but we felt that towards what we want to achieve in playing style, Raul would fit the requirements.”

He added:

“Let me remind you, Raul was elected as fans’ player of the year at Liverpool. It’s an extremely good deal for Chelsea. We are pleased he is here.”
