Chelsea are set to face competition from AS Roma for the signing of Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel, according to talkSPORT.

The Blues have been linked with the right-back for a number of years and with new boss Andre Villas-Boas also thought to be a fan, Chelsea could make a bid this coming January.

However, they may have to battle AS Roma who are believed to have already made tentative approaches to Ajax about van der Wiel’s availability.

Chelsea manager Villas-Boas has shown his preference for attacking full-backs this season by selecting Jose Bosingwa ahead of Branislav Ivanovic.
