After a frustrating two seasons at Stamford Bridge, Yury Zhirkov has completed his move from Chelsea to Anzhi Makhachkala for a fee believed to be around €15m, which has been officially confirmed on the Russian’s club’s website.

It’s not a great surprise that Zhirkov has left the club as he previously suggested he may seek a move away in order to gain more first team opportunities, which he didn’t really get during his time at Chelsea, especially as he suffered a few injuries whilst in west London.

Zhirkov told Anzhi’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be here in Makhachkala,

“I hope to make my Anzhi debut in our next game against Spartak Moscow (next Sunday).”

It’s a shame that it did not happen for Zhirkov at Chelsea, as I rate him as a player and would argue that he has been unlucky here, but I wish him all the best for the future.

Andre Villas-Boas had previously said that the Blues do not need to strengthen further this summer unless we suffer injuries or players leave, so will Zhirkov be replaced and if so, who will he be making way for? Previous reports suggest that he could be making way for Tottenham’s Luka Modric as Chelsea are set to go in with a third bid for the player. Other reports argue that the fee could be used in the purchase of Anderlecht’s Romelu Lukaku.

Another mistake by Gourlay. Letting Ballack go on a free, now selling a younger, faster, more skilled, tactically sound and dangerous left wing than Malouda….we’ll be unhappy by November..just like last year

We will all missed you for your 2 years spell at Chelsea, but we all wish you a happy and good will too. may your dream come through during your stay with your new team mates

Makes sense financially considering he would have probably left for nothing next summer when his contract expired.

However, with just the one wide player in the squad, the lack of width is even more of an issue. Need two more wide players.
