Salomon Kalou has claimed that Chelsea’s Premier League title bid was derailed by players sulking and pouting about who would be playing in the starting XI.

The Blues finished second in the league last season behind Manchester United and failed to retain their title status despite strengthening the squad in January after the likes of Fernando Torres and David Luiz arrived, but it seems that Kalou has implied that this was more of a hindrance as it led to players sulking over team selection.

The Ivorian said:

“Our players were preoccupied with finding out who was in the side and who wasn’t. This disrupted our progress.

“It is better to build a team gradually than to bring in players who will pout and sulk.”

(The Sun)

So, who are these players that pout and sulk, his words imply that it’s directed at a new arrival and more specifically £50m signing Torres, whose form wasn’t what we had hoped it would be, but he seemed more frustrated with his own form than anyone and I’m sure he’ll thrive after a rest, proper pre season and better service.

As for Kalou, he must be joking. Can’t whinge like that in public about your team-mate/s and accuse them of being sulking, it’s not only disrespectful but hypocritical when you’re the one who:

  • Admit frustration and imply that you will leave if you’re not afforded more first-team opportunities, which is fair enough, but go to the manager/board/owner and deal with it in-house, not the press.
  • Stormed down the tunnel immediately after the win against Tottenham, which was ironically in a pouty and sulky fashion.
  • He also failed to publicly back your manager towards the end of the season, which lacked class regardless of his personal opinions and the fact most of us knew Carlo Ancelotti would be sacked anyway.

And to be perfectly honest, looking through the names already in the squad the squad, I’d be astonished if ‘sulking’ is a new phenomena in the Stamford Bridge dressing room.

What do you make of Kalou’s words?

I’ve never much liked this player. I would be very pleased to see the back of him so that his squad place can be opened to someone else. He’s had plenty of time to show his worth, but as a starter he more often shows worthlessness – running into defenders when attempting to show skill or messing up first-time passes and one-twos. His appearances as substitute are sometimes slightly better, but even with the advantage of fresh legs against tiring defenders, he still runs into opponents and rarely beats them with skill. He’s actually no better than he was three years ago when everyone was talking of his potential. Now his time should be up because the full extent of that potential has been seen and is inadequate.
The worst thing is that this weak player is actually the nearest we have come to replacing Robben! It’s amazing the fans have been so tolerant with Kalou, bearing in mind the quality of player we know only too well should be at Chelsea in his place.
    Get rid.

d.biggest of d mistakes carlo made last season wuz starting dis piece of trash called kalou ahead of daniel sturridge……when u buy a striker for 50 million and he doesn’t score a goal in ova 6 games, do u expect him to start gallivanting up and down d place celebrating a failure which wuzn’t his making…..bloody hypocrite dat only knos how to score already finished goals……torres is eons away from u……

I don’t agree. I’m not saying Sturridge is not as good as Kalou, but tactically Kalou is a winger and Sturridge is a striker. The latter’s role will clash directly with Torres and Drogba but Kalou could add to the width of the pitch.

Kalou is not a winger. That’s where he was put to fulfil our square-peg-round-hole policy. Would you call Anelka a winger?

  9. Fleckworld says:

How did Kalou become a professional footballer and play for one of Europe’s top clubs? It’s a mystery that not even Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot could solve.

  10. I was just looking for this info for a while. After six hours of continuous Googleing, finally I got it in your website. I wonder what is the lack of Google strategy that don’t rank this type of informative web sites in top of the list. Usually the top sites are full of garbage.
