Having watched the rerun of the Wigan game on Sunday via Chelsea TV I realised what a huge impact Fernando Torres had on our play when he came on in the second half.

I was at the game and the reception for him from the Chelsea faithful was tremendous. A wall of sound greeted Torres which showed just how much Chelsea fans want the guy to succeed. He is obviously so desperate to repay CFC and us the fans for keeping behind him that he could be accused of trying too hard. He was only prevented from opening his scoring account by a fabulous save in the 89th minute by the Wigan keeper after he and Yossi Benayoun linked play brilliantly. On any other day that would have been the goal of the match and the sports press would have been salivating over the players’ quality.

Just like Fernando I also believe that Carlo Ancelotti is trying too hard to accommodate Torres AND Didier Drogba into the same side and system to the extent of playing a 4 4 2 formation which is not right for this squad of players. The simple fact of the matter is that Torres plays better with Nicolas Anelka and Drogba plays better with the Frenchman than either of them do when playing together. For this reason I would beg Carlo to start with Torres and Anelka against United at Old Trafford for our Champions league decider and use Drogba as an impact sub IF things need changing during the second half.

The team I would love to see start at United would give the Reds a dilemma. I would play a Christmas tree formation and go all out for an early goal:

CECH

IVANOVIC, ALEX, TERRY, COLE

RAMIRES, ESSIEN, LAMPARD

ANELKA, BENAYOUN

TORRES

United haven’t lost at home this season and unless we do something different, hit the ground running and get our passing game going early we will have lost our only real chance of silverware this season. Rio Ferdinand and Nemaja Vidic will stand strong and tall if we play as we did in the first leg. We need to change the style of our play to give lots of movement and really get our pressing game going. That is the only way we are going to score more than one goal at Old Trafford.

As for the ‘can Torres and Drogba play together’ debate, let that wait for another day as this game is far too important to continue with the experiment. So PLEASE Carlo, do something different and give us a chance to show how ordinary this United side really are. Listening to pundits and reading the sports press you would think that they are god’s gift to football when in truth, they are so beatable by a good Chelsea team putting in a good display. KTBFFH!
