A lot has been said about Chelsea and Manchester City’s alleged tussle to sign Real Madrid’s Kaka, but not so much about the pair battling it out for Dutch international Gregory van der Wiel.

It was revealed by talkSPORT last month that Ajax faced a fight to keep hold of their 22-year-old right-back following interest from the Premier League duo, but both the Blues and the Citizens are expected to firm up their interest in the summer.

The rumour could have some weight behind it as Frank Arnesen was quoted in Ajax Life (story here) midway through January stating that the Stamford Bridge club were interested in the player, but as a summer target, as a centre back was the higher priority at the time in the absence of the injured Alex.

Branislav Ivanovic is currently doing a great job in the right fullback position for us, but Jose Bosingwa has been tipped to leave the club this summer after failing to make much of an impact following his lengthy injury spell and the marauding van der Wiel could be the perfect long-term replacement.

Would van der Wiel prove a great addition to the club? Who should Chelsea look to sign in the summer?

If we were to sign a right back at all, Van Der Wiel would be the man. Although he’s already established himself as one of the best right-backs, he’s still rough around the edges and I think Chelsea could bring out the best in him.

I think the best right back would be Mallo from spain he is like the fastest man in Spain. he’s 19 and will be 5 times cheaper.

Haven’t really seen him, but I’ll make sure to keep a lookout.

We definitely need a right back. Bosingwa is not the player he was, and he wasn’t all that great defensively. Paulo F is getting on a bit. Ivanovic prefers Centre Back and will soon be challenging JT to partner Davis Luiz. Van Der Wiel may be the answer, but if not, there will have to be someone else.

    • Anthony Williams says:

I’m not sure how much Ivanovic will be challenging the likes of Terry, Luiz and Alex, but he does argue he prefers it, even though he has played most of his career at right back, for club and country.

And there’s loads out there, but I suppose van der Wiel is the most obvious name out there as he impressed at the last World Cup and has been linked with a move since.

Guys, he is not of Chelsea level! He is like Suarez, sometimes the best sometimes you do not notice him on the field. We need balanced man in defence.

    • Anthony Williams says:

He’s only 23 though, and Ivanovic is a balanced defender, so you want something different to Ivanovic for the sake of variety, right?

There’s alternatives, but from what I’ve seen, he’s a good prospect.
