Chelsea are continuing to engineer a move for RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku, with the Blues continuing work on trying to agree a fee with the Bundesliga club.
What’s the word?
That is according to journalist Simon Phillips, who has shared some insight on the current situation surrounding the west London club and and their efforts to sign the France international.
Phillips understands that “some sources insist” the deal is essentially complete, but whilst this is his current perception of the story at hand, the journalist believes that an official announcement may be some way off.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT on whether or not the situation regarding Nkunku had changed, Phillips said: “Nothing much, although some sources insist that it is all but done anyway. Chelsea are working on the fee was the last I heard, but he is expected to join Chelsea next summer. We might have to wait a while for any official announcements.”
Potter would be ecstatic
Quite simply, this is a move which would leave Chelsea manager Graham Potter ecstatic.
The signing of a player who has the potential to be a genuine world-class striker is bound to be a positive for any team, and with Nkunku’s attacking fluidity and versatility, the 47-year-old could be looking at his dream forward at Stamford Bridge.
The Frenchman, who boasts a £52m release clause, truly burst onto the scene in the 2021/22 campaign, which saw him bag a whopping 35 goals and 20 assists across 52 games.
It was a massive return in comparison to the season prior, when the former Paris Saint-Germain prospect recorded a more modest six goals and six assists from 28 Bundesliga appearances.
Now operating in a more advanced role, Nkunku has already scored more goals in this year’s Bundesliga campaign as he did in the entirety of 2020/21, having netted seven in ten league appearances so far for an RB Leipzig side who have endured a tricky start to their campaign.
With the hopes of securing his services in time for next summer, Chelsea will be hard at work for this deal. Although that is continuing to be sorted behind the scenes, it may still be some time for an official announcement, as Phillips has stated.
