While Chelsea failed to win at home for a third successive game in the Premier League, the Blues’ performance evoked great confidence for the rest of the season.
Football games are often dictated by the finest of margins, and the Blues’ 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday was a paradigmatic case.
Despite having a larger share of the possession, more shots and more corners (as per BBC), Chelsea were unable to convert their pressure into goals.
Had Chelsea’s defending been less careless for both of Liverpool’s first-half goals, then the result would have been different for Frank Lampard’s men.
Dealing with yet another defeat is painful for Chelsea fans to digest, but they must recognise the progress made under Frank Lampard’s guidance.
For the second time this season, a depleted and new-look Chelsea fought toe-to-toe with the European Champions. On both occasions, Chelsea arguably were the better team and should have won.
This ability to compete with the league and Europe’s best should be of enormous pride to the Blues. Notably, as they find themselves in unchartered territory with the transfer ban and given the departure of Eden Hazard.
Following the defeat against Liverpool, Frank Lampard was quick to emphasise the positive aspects of his side’s performance as he revealed to Chelsea TV.
Here’s how Chelsea fans responded to the defeat on social media:

It’s really good to see the fans standing solidly behind the team.. but Lampard really need to stop putting injured players at risk, not like there is no replacement, one of the reasons he was forced to make an early substitution and it played some parts negatively.

The “fans” whining about our position in the league talking about “we need points not positives” really don’t know what building is. We’re playing some of our best football after not being able to sign players. We also lost our best attacking player too. Relax- results will come!
