Frank Lampard’s willingness to integrate Chelsea’s young players has been a highlight during his brief tenure as the Blues’ boss. One player who has benefitted from Lampard’s approach has been Fikayo Tomori.
The 21-year-old spent last season on loan with Frank Lampard at Derby County, and such was his importance, the Englishman made 55 appearances in all competitions for the Rams. The Chelsea youngster was even awarded player of the season last term, indicative of his influence at Derby.
Despite his impressive performances with the Championship side, the defender wasn’t expected to feature so significantly for Chelsea this campaign. He was linked with Everton for much of the summer.
A loan move to the Toffees collapsed once David Luiz joined Arsenal, (per Football Insider) and since staying at the club, Tomori has impressed.
The centre-half was brought on from the bench and played 35 minutes in Chelsea’s narrow shoot-out defeat to Liverpool in the European Super Cup final.
Tomori has also made the matchday squad in each of Chelsea’s four league games, and he played the entire 90 minutes in the Blues’ 2-2 draw against Sheffield United.
As per Chelsea’s twitter account, Tomori joined the Blues as a seven-year-old and Chelsea fans are understandably delighted with the academy graduate’s progress.
Here’s the best of the reaction:
Definitely a tough decision to make for Lampard – Zouma, Christensen or Tomori to partner Rudiger
