Following an uncertain start to the new season, Chelsea produced an emphatic statement by thrashing Wolves 5-2 at the Molineux Stadium on Saturday.
Much had been made about the Blues’ start to the new campaign, particularly with their fragile defence.
While the Blues still have one of the worst defensive records in the league this season – only Norwich City have conceded more goals – the result and performance was a resounding answer to those who have doubted them.
Wolves have enjoyed a tremendous return to the top-flight of English football as evidenced by their ability to reach the Europa League during their first season back.
More importantly, Nuno’s record against ‘top’ opposition in the league, particularly at home, has been astonishing.
The only top-six sides that beat Wolves at home last season were Liverpool and Spurs (as per transfermarkt). With Wolves recording famous home wins over Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.
They even beat Spurs 3-1 at White Hart Lane and held the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United to draws away from the Molineux (as per transfermarkt).
Therefore, it’s unsurprising to see Chelsea’s delight at beating Wolves with such ease. One player who performed integrally against Wolves was Tammy Abraham – who fired his first senior hat-trick for the club.
Here’s how Chelsea fans reacted on social media to the 21-year-old’s post-match comments on Chelsea TV.
