It has been announced that Tammy Abraham will take the infamous number nine shirt at Chelsea this season, though the apparent curse hasn’t put off the striker one bit which has left many fans in West London praising his attitude.

The number nine shirt has been a sure sign that a player will be a flop at the Blues – ever since Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink left the club in 2004. The likes of Steve Sidwell, Franco Di Santo, Radamel Falcao, Alvaro Morata and most recently Gonzalo Higuain have all worn it – between them they bagged just 22 goals in 119 appearances – 15 of them coming from Morata.

Abraham said: “I’m honoured to wear the number nine shirt. I spoke to the manager and he asked me if I’m ready to take the number nine and I said, ‘Yeah, I’m ready’. So I’m glad he offered the number nine. I’ve heard all the rubbish about the number nine. I’m here to play my game and do my best.”

Many of the Stamford Bridge support took to Twitter to share their views on the announcement with a number of supporters worried that Abraham would become the next cursed number nine at the club. One claimed he would be another Morata whilst an additional fan said the striker would be a failure next season.

Others were quick to laud their returning loan star following his comments, with one member of The Blues faithful saying it is just a nonsense myth. Whilst ‘elite’ and ‘top’ were just two superlatives used by a number of the Blues fans to describe his mentality. One supporter even stuck his neck on the line and declared that the 21-year-old would be one of the top scorers next season.

Here’s the best of the reaction from Chelsea supporters:
