Chelsea’s midfield anchor Jorginho was labelled many things last season, though he was most notably dubbed Maurizio Sarri’s “son” from a section of the Stamford Bridge support and by Cesc Fabregas. His performances in the blue colours of West London often drew unfair criticism but that’s beginning to change this pre-season with many fans quick to laud their Italian star.

The 27-year-old joined the club just over a year ago in a £50m deal from Napoli following his former manager Sarri to Chelsea. Jorginho played in 54 matches last season, all of which from a deep defensive midfield position – during pre-season, new boss Frank Lampard has tested a number of formations but it was his partnership with Mateo Kovacic against Barcelona which has many fans purring at the thought of the duo in midfield next season.

One member of The Blues’ fanbase called him a Rolls Royce of a player, claiming he is the man that drives their passing and play whilst another backed this up by saying he simply controlled the game against Barcelona, dominating their midfield. One supporter even went as far as saying he singlehandedly exposed their overhyped midfield by playing a blinder.

It may be a tough road back for N’Golo Kante who returned to West London to continue recovery from injury – if the holding midfield duo of Jorginho and Kovacic becomes more of a regular thing with their impressive performances then the loveable Kante may find it hard to regain his place in the side.
