With the new season just 38 days away, Chelsea face a bit of a problem. The club has a real lack of goals from midfield and it is really starting to worry me. Being able to rely on your team to score goals rather than an individual makes like a whole lot easier. We relied on one man last season, with Eden Hazard contributing 34% of our goals, and thankfully we got away with it.

However, with Hazard gone, Chelsea are left with many forward and midfield options who failed to step up last season. We could be in big trouble in the opening months of next season, especially with the long-term injury to a key attacking player. During a friendly against Major League Soccer side New England Revolution, Ruben Loftus-Cheek suffered a ruptured Achilles. It’s an injury that could see the 23-year-old sidelined for up to a year, and with a real lack of goals from midfield, it will hurt us badly.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek enjoyed a stand-out season for the club last campaign, scoring 10 goals in 14 starts in all competitions from midfield. Among the 10 goals were six goals in just six Premier League starts, which is by far the best from Chelsea’s central midfield options. To put Loftus-Cheek’s contribution in the Premier League into context, fellow central midfielders Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley combined for just three goals in a combined 34 starts in the Premier League.

According to the Telegraph, the £27 million-rated Loftus-Cheek has put pen-to-paper on a new five-year contract with the club, worth a reported £150,000 a week. Loftus-Cheek is a very big player for us and will be a provide a massive boost when he returns to first-team action. He has proven that he has the quality needed to thrive in the Premier League, so last night’s news will come as a big boost for both us the fans and the club.
