It was one of the baffling decisions of last season, N’Golo Kante playing further forward rather than in his natural defensive midfield role.

What’s being said?

With the new season around the corner, author Mark Worall reckons Frank Lampard could reap the rewards of moving Kante back into his defensive midfield role.

Worall suggested that Kante will feel like a completely new signing for manager Frank Lampard next season.

He said: “Extraordinary to think that N’Golo Kanté is going to look like a new £200 million signing for Chelsea under Frank Lampard.” (Source: Twitter)

What was Sarri thinking?

The decision to move Kante to a defensive midfield role still remains one of the most baffling decisions under former manager Maurizio Sarri.

Sarri was stubborn in his thinking, saying Kante didn’t have the traits to play in the defensive midfield role in the same way that Jorginho could.

After a season playing further forward, a move back to his natural defensive midfield role will be a welcome change for both Kante and Lampard next season.

Worall is right in his assessment, with Chelsea conceding 56 goals in all competitions last season, Kante moving back to his natural role will feel like a new signing for a defence, who was far from stable.

And given Kante’s rise to the top of world football, a value of £200m isn’t too far fetched for someone of the France international’s talents.
