Chelsea’s main summer saga has not been about the players, but the manager – and that’s taking Eden Hazard into account – but we all knew he would leave eventually.

With Maurizio Sarri edging closer to the exit door, it is probably time to accept that a new man is on his way. Whether that be a homecoming for Frank Lampard or a third spell for Jose Mourinho remains to be seen, but one surprise candidate has entered into contention – to supporters’ delight.

Erik Ten Hag led Ajax to a Dutch double and within seconds of a Champions League final – and the brand of football that saw them ease past Real Madrid and Juventus in the competition’s previous rounds made the continent take notice of a special Ajax side.

The Daily Mirror claim Ten Hag is under consideration at Chelsea – and given the limited resources in light of the impending transfer ban, the Dutchman could be called upon to deliver results beyond the team’s expectations – just like his Ajax team.

With Sarri expected to join Juventus, fans have had reservations about an emotional return for Lampard – but judging by these tweets, Ten Hag’s arrival may be met with a bit more optimism:
