Southampton are eyeing a move in January for Chelsea defender Gary Cahill, The Mirror reports.

The 32-year-old England international is out of contract at the end of the season and is considering a move in January due to a lack of playing opportunities under Maurizio Sarri’s reign.

Cahill has struggled to get into the first-team squad amidst competition with David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger, with his only Premier League appearance of the season coming off the bench during last months goalless draw with West Ham.

Southampton are keen to take advantage of the player’s situation as Mark Hughes seeks to bolster his leaky defensive line and the opportunity of playing regularly Premier League football with the Saints will appeal to Cahill.

Championship side Aston Villa are also in the hunt for the player, who left Villa Park for Bolton in 2008, but Cahill is not keen on dropping down a division.
