Chelsea are set to go toe-to-toe with Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona in the hunt for Ajax midfielder Donny van der Beek, according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla via SportsMole.

The 21-year-old midfielder has developed into a key asset for the Eredivisie side and impressed in the midweek draw with Bayern Munich in the Champions League, attracting further interest in his services.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is keen to add the Holland international to his midfield options, although Ajax are unlikely to sanction a departure until next summer at the earliest given his importance to their first-team.

Valued at £16.2m by TransferMarktChelsea may have to part with a significant sum to land the talented midfielder but finances should not be an issue for the West London side.

Van der Beek’s potential arrival could come amidst a major rejuvenation to Chelsea’s midfield, where Cesc Fabregas and Danny Drinkwater could both become surplus to requirements between now and the end of the season.
