Chelsea have been given a boost in their hunt to sign Juventus defender Daniele Rugani after talks regarding a renewal stalled, according to CalcioMercato.

The 24-year-old Italy international was identified as a prime target for Blues boss Maurizio Sarri in the summer transfer window but the Serie A giants refused to agree to a sale, despite bringing Leonardo Bonucci back to the club from AC Milan.

Rugani has since appeared just twice for Juventus this season, due to competition for places with the likes of Bonucci, Georgio Chiellini and Mehdi Benatia, but Massimiliano Allegri’s side are keen to secure him down to a new deal.

However, despite Juventus’ intention to get a deal done, there has been no progress regarding a renewal and the Italian giant’s initial priority may be to secure the futures of Alex Sandro and Mario Mandzukic as they both see their current deals expire in 2020.

Rugani, meanwhile, sees his contract run until the end of the 2020-21 season.
