Chelsea failed with a move to sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak during the summer transfer window, according to Ekipa.

The Slovenia international has excelled in the Spanish capital with Diego Simeone’s side, establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in world football after moving to the club from Benfica in 2014.

Chelsea, along with Liverpool, are both said to have tried to sign the 25-year-old during the summer transfer window but their offers fell short of the goalkeeper’s €100m (£88.4m) release clause.

The Blues eventually signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao for a world-record fee, surpassing the figure Liverpool had splashed days earlier to land Alisson from Roma.

Kepa has done well in the first few months of his time in the Premier League by becoming a core figure in the side that has stood undefeated in their opening nine matches, keeping four clean sheets to help establish the Blues’ third in the standings.
