Chelsea are plotting a move to beat Manchester United to AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli in January, according to reports via The Sun.
The Blues have enjoyed a fine start to life under Maurizio Sarril, standing unbeaten in the Premier League from the opening eight matches and sitting joint-top of the standings, but a defensive shake-up is on the cards.
Gary Cahill is set to leave Chelsea in 2019 when his contract comes to a close and could push for a move in January if he does not earn increased first-team opportunities, which would leave the Blues in need of a replacement.
On top of this, 22-year-old Andreas Christensen has become frustrated with his lack of chances under Sarri and could also look to jump ship in a move that would see the Blues lacking significant depth at the heart of the defence.
Romagnoli, AC Milan’s captain, would not be cheap but could also be considered to be a long-term replacement for David Luiz.
