Chelsea have made a crucial decision in the final days of the transfer window after informing a key player that he will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge.

The Times reports Maurizio Sarri has informed Belgium international goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois he is free to leave just days before the start of the Premier League season, with the stopper holding out for a move to Real Madrid.

Courtois is keen to return to Madrid, where he previously spent time with Atletico and where his young family still lives, and Sarri confirmed after Chelsea’s Community Shield defeat to Manchester City that he can leave if he wants to.

Quoted after the game, Sarri said:

“I have no reaction on the agent. I’m not interested in the agent, I want to hear if Courtois tomorrow will say the same,’ said Sarri. I have to speak with my club. I want only players with high level of motivation. I don’t have any answer to the agent.”
