Maurizio Sarri is ready to spend heavily at Chelsea to bolster the side he inherited at Stamford Bridge and remains in the hunt for a new defensive addition.

After bringing Italy international Jorginho to the club from Napoli, Sarri is keen on raiding Serie A once again for the services of Jorginho’s compatriot Daniele Rugani – but has seen Juventus stand firm on their demands.

Goal reports that Chelsea are now set to make an improved bid of £45m for the 23-year-old, having seen their initial approach of £36m rejected by the Italian champions as they sought at least £10m more.

With those demands having been met, Chelsea are now expected to push through a deal for the seven-cap international and are prepared to pay around £4m-a-year in wages.

Rugani has worked alongside Sarri previously during the duo’s time with Empoli, where they earned promotion from Serie B, and is understood to be keen on a reunion.
