Chelsea seem to have switched transfer targets in the hunt for a new central defender, as it appears they have turned their attention away from Juventus’ Daniele Rugani.

The Italy international has been heavily linked with a transfer to Stamford Bridge in his search for more regular first-team football but Chelsea now seem to be eyeing his compatriot, according to Corriere Dello Sport.

Per the reports, Chelsea have lodged a €40m approach to land 24-year-old Juventus defender Mattia Caldara and, despite the Serie A champions seeking €50m for the Italy international, a deal could be agreed in the region of €45m.

Caldara is way down Juventus’ pecking order in the heart of defence and spent last season on-loan at Atalanta, where he made 34 appearances on his return to the club which he left in 2017 – but he is yet to appear for Juventus.

It is unlikely that Max Allegri has a plan for Caldara in his squad this season and a sale would help recoup the funds splashed on Cristiano Ronaldo.
