Chelsea are eyeing considerable improvements to their defensive line after missing out on Champions League football next term, with an exciting deal mentioned by media outlets on the continent.

Football Italia states Chelsea representatives have met with Juventus defender Daniele Rugani regarding a potential switch to the Premier League, with the Italy ace frustrated by his lack of playing opportunities in Turin.

The 23-year-old started 22 Serie A games last term but just once in the Champions League, while the seven-cap Italy international will also be forced to watch the World Cup at home this summer following his nation’s failure to qualify.

With Rugani determined to secure more playing time, it’s indicated that he is seriously considering a move to the Premier League but Chelsea would have to pay in excess of €20m for the young defender, potentially even more if Juventus play hardball.

Juventus may look to retain Rugani’s services too, especially with Benedikt Howedes returning to Schalke and speculation regarding the future of Mehdi Benatia.
