Chelsea are looking to bolster their defensive ranks in the summer transfer window but their quest to land an ace from within the Premier League looks set to end in disappointment.

The Blues are one of a number of clubs linked with the services of Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles, who caught the eye this season during the Magpies thrilling campaign in their return to the top-flight.

Lascelles’ side exceeded expectations this summer and the 24-year-old attracted a lot of attention as a result, with Chelsea joined in the hunt by Liverpool, West Ham and Everton.

However, speaking to The ChronicleLascelles suggested he will remain at St. James’ Park due to the first-team guarantees he enjoys on Tyneside.

“I’m very happy here. You hear things, you hear rumours and stuff, but I’m a young player and I need to be playing football at a good club – and that’s what this is.”

“This is the right club for me at the right time. We have a huge fanbase, an amazing manager, and this club is massive. It has so much history.”
