Inter Milan may look to take advantage of defender Stefan De Vrij’s contract situation at Lazio, according to the Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Football-Italia.net).

Reports have linked Chelsea with a move for the centre back in the summer, but it seems the Serie A club may look to hijack the Blues’ move for the Dutch international.

De Vrij’s current deal at Lazio expires at the end of the season, but he wants to sign a new contract to demonstrate his loyalty to the Italian side after they helped him through a number of serious injuries.

However, it seems talks have been delayed by the 26 year old’s agent. The player can sign a pre-contract agreement with another club, and Inter are said to be keeping a close eye on the situation.

De Vrij is believed to be reluctant to move on a free transfer unless discussions with Lazio stall completely. The likeliest outcome is that he signs a new deal with a low release clause.

Football Italia report that the figure could be as low as €25million (£22m); a fee that Chelsea would have no trouble in paying.
