Southampton will challenge Chelsea for West Ham striker Andy Carroll, according to the Sun journalist Mike McGrath.

The Blues are looking for a target man to provide backup for Alvaro Morata. They had previously tried to sign Fernando Llorente, and have looked at Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke, but it seems the former Liverpool man is also being targeted.

Chelsea will however face competition for Carroll with the player having been added to Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino’s transfer wish list for the January window. The South Coast club are struggling for goals, and without injured top goalscorer Charlie Austin, they are looking to strengthen up front.

Carroll has struggled with form and fitness this season. The 28 year old missed the first three league games of the campaign with a groin injury, and has been in and out of the starting lineup since then.

The striker’s double against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday were his first goals of the season, and he was once again benched for the 1-1 draw against Tottenham yesterday evening.
