Chelsea right back Todd Kane has ended his loan spell at Dutch club FC Groningen six months early after failing to establish himself in the first team with the Eredivisie side.

The 24 year old did start three of the first five league games of the season for Groningen, but he has only started three more games since then.

A knee injury sustained back in late September curtailed Kane’s first team opportunities somewhat and the defender’s last start came back in November in the 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord.

Speaking to Dagblad van het Noorden about Kane’s return to Chelsea, Groningen’s technical manager Ron Jans said that there was little prospect of the full back being picked in the second half of the season:

“Todd had little chance of playing time for the rest of this season”

What the future holds now for Kane, it is not known. A loan spell for the rest of the campaign at an English club in the lower leagues is the likeliest possibility at the moment.
