Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel has revealed that Chelsea left back Baba Rahman is keen to join the Bundesliga club this January.

A number of clubs are believed to be interested in signing the Ghanaian international on loan, but speaking to RevierSport.de about the player, Heidel believes the 23 year old has already decided to sign for Schalke. The Blues however have yet to sign off on the deal with the German side seeking a loan deal longer than six months:

“The player wants to join us. It is now a matter of principle whether his home club Chelsea wants to relinquish him. We aim for a longer loan deal with Baba than with Marko Pjaca, who comes to us from Juventus until the end of the season.”

Rahman has only been back in full training for a few weeks after a year long layoff with a knee injury. Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is said to have been impressed by the full back’s performances in training so far, and the Daily Mail report that the defender could be given a chance in the first team.

The Blues are likely only prepared to let the Ghanaian leave when they find a suitable replacement. Along with Kenedy, Rahman is the only other player who can cover for first choice left wing back Marcos Alonso.
