Newcastle United have offered to take Chelsea defender David Luiz on loan, according to the Evening Standard.

The Blues defender played under Magpies boss Rafa Benitez when the Spaniard was in charge of the Blues during a seven month spell in the 2012/13 season, and it is believed the former Real Madrid manager is keen to link up with him again at St James’ Park.

Luiz is currently sidelined with a knee injury, which has kept him out of the last six games. He was however fit when he was not included in the squad for the 1-0 win over Manchester United in early November following a reported bust up with manager Antonio Conte.

The 30 year old’s place was subsequently taken by Andreas Christensen, and before his injury the Brazilian played just once in four games. Speculation has been rife that the centre back will leave Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window. It is unlikely however that Chelsea would accept Luiz leaving on loan, especially with no replacement lined up.
