Chelsea legend John Terry says that Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk would be an excellent addition to Antonio Conte’s squad.

The Dutchman has been dropped by the Saints after some poor performances, increasing speculation that he could be sold in the January transfer window, with the Blues being joined by Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in the race to sign the 26 year old.

Speaking on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football last night (quotes via the Sun), Terry believes that although van Dijk may not be an automatic starter for Chelsea, he would be worth the investment to strengthen the club’s squad:

“If they [Southampton] are demanding £60million, if I were Chelsea I would be saying more like £55m if he’s not getting in their starting XI.”

Blues boss Conte has admitted that van Dijk is a “really good player” in recent days but has refused to be drawn on whether the London club will make a January bid for the centre back.

Reliable Times journalist Paul Joyce reported last week that Manchester City are preparing a £70m bid for the Netherlands international so Chelsea will have to move fast if they want to land the highly sought after defender.
