Arsenal are “closing in” on the signing of Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to the Sun journalist Daniel Cutts.

Chelsea are among a host of teams pursuing the German international with the 22 year old’s contract expiring in the summer, but the Gunners are said to be quietly confident that they have won the battle to secure the player on a free transfer.

In addition to the Blues, clubs such as Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Juventus, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have all been keeping tabs on Goretzka in recent months.

The German told Kicker magazine at the weekend that he would make his decision about his future before the end of January, so Arsenal’s apparent capture of the midfielder is not set in stone just yet.

Goretzka is currently sidelined with a leg injury which has caused him to miss three of the last five games. He was a substitute in the 2-2 draw against Cologne on Saturday, but he will now remain on the sidelines until he fully recovers.
