Chelsea and Liverpool are now favourites to sign Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to Sport.
In an interview with the Guardian last week, Germany’s General Manager Oliver Bierhoff let slip that the 22 year old was eyeing up a switch to the Premier League and Sport believes this indicates that the Blues are in pole position to sign the German international.
Goretzka’s contract expires in the summer, and he will be able to talk with clubs in January about a free transfer at the end of the season. Up until now, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan have all been tipped as likely destinations for the midfielder, but Bierhoff’s comments have seemingly increased the chances of a Premier League move instead.
Goretzka has been in excellent form for Schalke this season, with four goals and one assist in ten games. He has played in both a number 10 role and as a deeper lying midfielder this campaign, and would likely be seen as an alternative to Cesc Fabregas in the side.
