Chelsea are among five teams monitoring Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong’s situation at the Eredivisie club, according to Voetbal International.

The Dutch magazine reports that the Blues have a “serious interest” in the player, and they have been joined by Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Leipzig and Hamburg in the race to sign him.

The 20 year old was linked with the Blues earlier this month but de Jong has sent the rumour mill into overdrive following comments he made after the 5-1 win against Roda JC on Sunday. The Dutchman was adamant he deserves more starting opportunities following recent displays:

“I have to play now. That is my feeling and that is no mystery. It’s up to the coach, but I do not know what I can do more than this.”

In his last two substitute appearances, the Dutch Under 21 international has made an astonishing five assists, coming in the 8-0 win over NAC Breda and the victory against Roda. He averaged an assist every 15 minutes during those two games.

So far this season, de Jong has started just four league matches under manager Marcel Keizer, with his last start coming in the 2-1 defeat to Vitesse Arnhem back in September. When he did start in the Dutch Cup against De Dijk last month, he scored and provided an assist in a 4-1 win.
