Barcelona have stepped up their pursuit of Gremio midfielder Arthur Melo after technical secretary Robert Fernandez went to watch the 21 year old on Wednesday night, reports Mundo Deportivo.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid have also been scouting the Brazilian in recent months, according to the Daily Mail, but it seems that Barca are the ones who are the most interested at the moment.

Talent scout Andre Cury, who was influential in Neymar joining the Catalan club, as well as discovering the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Marquinhos, has persuaded Fernandez into watching Gremio’s 1-0 win against Lanus in the the first leg of the Copa Libertadores final.

Mundo Deportivo report that Arthur did not have one of his best games, but his style of play is said to be reminiscent of Xavi and Iniesta. His passing ability would hold him in good stead at Barca, although it must be said his numbers don’t look particularly great. He has just one goal and one assist in 38 games so far this season

It is likely Chelsea will also be keeping a close eye on Arthur’s performances in the Copa Libertadores. The second leg takes place next Wednesday night.
