Manchester City will step up their attempts to sign Chelsea target Ryan Bertrand in the January transfer window, according to the Sun.

City have looked at a number of left back options in recent months, with Juventus full back Alex Sandro and Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam two players also linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge.

The Sun are reporting however that manager Pep Guardiola is keener on Southampton defender Bertrand instead. The knee injury to first choice left back Benjamin Mendy has forced the Premier League leaders into making a January signing to provide cover for the Frenchman.

Bertrand spent ten years at Chelsea after moving from Gillingham’s under 18s in 2005, but after a number of loan spells, he made the permanent switch to Southampton back in January 2015 for £10m. He has gone on to become a regular member of the England squad, with 17 caps to his name, including starts in three of the last four internationals.
