Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown doesn’t seem to be Chelsea centre back Antonio Rudiger’s biggest fan going by his comments during BT Sport’s coverage of the Blues’ game against Manchester City on Saturday.
Speaking (via the Metro) about the German international’s lack of composure in possession of the ball, Keown questioned whether the 24 year old has enough quality to play for Chelsea:
“He doesn’t look, Rudiger, like he’s at the level required here. He looks very nervy in possession.”
The German did however make a goal line clearance from City striker Gabriel Jesus to keep the score at 1-0. It is probably fair to say though that he is not first choice yet if all players are fit and available. Manager Antonio Conte would likely want to keep Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill as his back three in an ideal world.
The defender signed from Roma for £29m in the summer and has already started seven games for the club. Here is some of the Twitter reaction to Rudiger’s performance at the weekend.
Couldn't give a toss what Keown thinks of Rudiger. Have had to listen to pundits slag David Luiz off for 6 years, while he wins medals.

'Rüdiger isn't good enough to play for Chelsea' – Keown, excuse me, he'll played well last night and will improve like what Alonso did.

Lol Keown said Rudiger isn't up to the level, this is why english commentators shouldn't be allowed

Martin Keown thinks a Germany international (Rudiger ) is not upto the standard required at Chelsea. ..You begin to wonder how good he was!

I disagree with mr Keown, Rudiger absolutely bossed Sane and protected his side very well. And his long ball passing is B+ if not A.
