Atletico Madrid are in no rush to sign Chelsea striker Diego Costa before the Spanish transfer deadline tonight, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Atletico officials are said to be solely focused on making sure that the club’s move to their new stadium on September 15 is as smooth as possible, meaning contract negotiations with manager Diego Simeone, goalkeeper Jan Oblak and discussions with Chelsea over Costa have all been put on the back-burner.

With Costa specifically, Atletico are unwilling to meet Chelsea’s asking price and they are hoping that the player will attempt to patch things up with the Blues in order for the price tag to come down.

The time frame for this to happen is January 1st, and not September 1st, according to Mundo Deportivo, as they think Costa’s onerous €8.2million a season wages may mean a reduced price for the player in the January transfer window.

In addition they believe a loan switch to another club could also still happen. Portugal’s transfer window closes on September 22nd and after starting out his professional career at Braga, he could find himself returning to Super Liga for a six month spell while negotiations with Atletico continue.
