Chelsea legend Frank Lampard believes that Antonio Conte side’s solid defensive base will mean they will progress further than other English teams in Europe this season.
The Blues started off their Champions League campaign with a 6-0 win over Azerbaijan champions Qarabag at Stamford Bridge last night. Writing before the match in his column for the Evening Standard, Lampard says that Chelsea’s defensive solidity will mean they only have to ensure that their forward line is firing to progress in the competition:
“When I look at the other English teams in the Champions League, some of them will struggle at the back, whereas Chelsea have a great base. After that it comes down to the attacking players being in form, so Chelsea have a lot to be optimistic about.”
Two players scored on their European debuts for the club last night with Davide Zappacosta and Tiemoue Bakayoko, adding to goals from Pedro Rodriguez, Cesar Azpilicueta and Michy Batshuayi, to sew up a convincing opening victory in the competition.
Atletico Madrid’s 0-0 draw away against Roma means that the Blues top the group after the first round of fixtures. The London club will head to Spain for their next group match on 27th September.
