Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has confirmed that Davide Zappacosta’s spectacular goal against Qarabag in the Champions League was not intentional.

There was some debate among pundits and fans alike about whether the right wing back had intended to cross or shoot for the Blues’ second goal of the night, but speaking in a press conference after the match, Conte said Zappacosta had told him he was not looking to score:

“He has said that he wanted to cross. (But) he scored and it’s important for us.”

The Italian international sealed his £25m move from Torino on deadline day, and his impressive all round display last night will no doubt prompt some supporters to already think that the money was well spent.

There is likely to be still some adapting to the Premier League for the 25 year old however, but it will be interesting to see whether Conte opts to start the wing back ahead of Victor Moses for the crunch clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
