Rennes centre back Joris Gnagnon has confirmed that he received offers from both Chelsea and Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund before the start of the season.

The 20 year old broke in to the Ligue One side’s first team last campaign, but in an interview with French website Footmercato (translated by the Sun), he said he needs more than one season of top flight football under his belt before he considers moving on to another club. The defender was however keen to leave the door open to switching clubs next summer:

“After that, I had to look the truth in the face, that is, if I went to Chelsea right away, I was not sure I would be playing. You’re going to Dortmund, you’re not sure you’re playing either. Whether I went to the right or left, I was not sure I was playing.”

“I weighed up the pros and cons with my entourage and my agent and we thought that it was better to do one more season at Rennes. It was not easy but we had to make a choice.”

Gnagnon is a France Under 20 international, but he is also eligible to play for the Ivory Coast. He has played 44 times for Rennes since making his senior debut against Troyes in January 2016. This season, he has so far started every league match, including the 2-2 draw against Saint-Etienne yesterday afternoon. Rennes currently sit 15th in Ligue One, having conceded twelves times in seven matches.
